Find the best time to visit the Burren for your interests
The best time to visit the Burren is a choice between different priorities. May and June overlap the flowering windows of spring gentian and mountain avens. Summer has the higher typical daytime temperatures in the regional climate record. A winter visit needs a land-based plan and attention to attraction opening arrangements. Decide which experience matters most before choosing your dates.
Keep your preferred season separate from the conditions of a particular day. Flowering windows describe a natural season; actual blooms and the operation of a crossing depend on conditions during your visit. Build some flexibility into your itinerary: choose the right walking route for the conditions and leave room to move an outdoor visit. The sights overview helps you combine the wider landscape with caves and visitor attractions.

Weather: Shannon climate averages
Met Éireann's Shannon Airport normals for 1991 to 2020 provide a regional reference. They describe a historical period at the airport, rather than conditions measured at Fanore Beach, Mullaghmore or the cliff edge. The maximum and minimum columns are mean daily high and low temperatures; rainfall is the mean monthly total. Use them to compare months when packing and choosing dates.
| Month | Mean high °C | Mean low °C | Rainfall mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 8.9 | 3.3 | 103.8 |
| February | 9.4 | 3.3 | 86.7 |
| March | 10.9 | 4.0 | 75.8 |
| April | 13.4 | 5.8 | 62.3 |
| May | 16.0 | 8.1 | 63.1 |
| June | 18.3 | 10.8 | 69.6 |
| July | 19.5 | 12.6 | 75.8 |
| August | 19.1 | 12.4 | 87.6 |
| September | 17.5 | 10.7 | 77.4 |
| October | 14.2 | 8.1 | 95.5 |
| November | 11.1 | 5.5 | 106.6 |
| December | 9.2 | 3.7 | 115.4 |
Within these station averages, April has the lowest monthly rainfall and December the highest, while July has the highest mean daily maximum. None of those comparisons selects a reliably dry week. Look at the forecast close to your visit and make the final walking or coastal decision from the day's conditions, rather than from a monthly table.

A seasonal island and Cliffs day from Galway
This excursion combines transport, an English-speaking driver-guide, Cliffs admission and a return island ferry; choose dates around the available sailing season.
Flowering season and species windows
Spring gentian flowers from April to June, and mountain avens from May to July. Their windows overlap in May and June, making those months a useful starting point for a flower-focused visit. These are natural species windows, rather than a report of what is flowering today. Leave the exact discovery to the walk instead of expecting a particular plant at every stop.
The Burren brings arctic-alpine and Mediterranean plants together. Winter grazing helps keep vegetation short and supports the spring display. This is a working landscape as well as a place to observe nature. Stay on marked routes, leave plants unpicked and photograph what you find without taking stones or fossils away. Read the National Park guide for trail choices and the distinction between park access and private farmland.
Winter and the ended 2026 ferry season
Doolin Ferry's published season ran from 28 February to 1 November 2026 and has ended as of 2 November 2026. Build a winter itinerary around the visits on land you want to make. For a future boat day, use the sailing calendar for your chosen date and read the Doolin ferry guide before arranging the rest of the journey.
The National Park has free entry and is open year-round, but access on foot still requires suitable conditions and a route that matches your experience. Mullaghmore variants are very difficult. At the Cliffs, the visitor area's published November to February hours are 09:00 to 17:00. The separate coastal path has closures: under the status dated 1 August 2026, the through route from Doolin to the visitor centre is closed, along with the southern Liscannor/Hag's Head section.
Caves also need date-specific planning. Consult the Doolin Cave visit guide for the stairs and clothing, and the Aillwee guide for its winter arrangements. Put the booked visit into the day first, then decide what outdoor stop can fit around it without rushing.
Coastal conditions before setting out
Wind, tide and swell act together at the coast. Even when each factor appears modest on its own, their combination can create danger. Use current coastal and marine forecasts for a proposed boat day and respect local warnings at the shore. Historical air temperatures do not describe sea conditions or swimming safety. Give the daily decision priority over the outing you hoped to make when booking your trip.
Questions about the seasons
When do the main flower windows overlap?
May and June overlap spring gentian's April to June window and mountain avens' May to July window. Actual flowering varies.
Is April guaranteed to be dry?
April has the lowest monthly rainfall in the Shannon normals shown here. That historical comparison is not a forecast for your visit.
Can I plan around winter ferries from Doolin?
The published 2026 season ended on 1 November. Choose any future crossing from the available sailing calendar for your date.
