Choosing between Burren tours

Burren tours on this page are public bus excursions from Galway, Dublin and Limerick. Their practical differences start with where you board, how much of the day is spent travelling and which attraction admissions are included. A drive through limestone country provides an overview; a marked walk in the national park is a separate kind of visit with its own terrain and access arrangements.

Choose your departure city before comparing small differences in the route. If your accommodation is already on the west coast, travelling back to a distant departure point can make the day unnecessarily complicated. For a vehicle reserved for your party and routes including Poulnabrone, use the private tour comparison. For your own bus itinerary, see getting to the Burren.

Our picks: Burren day trips

Our take: Galway departures suit a shorter journey to the cliffs, while Dublin trips include time in Galway. The Limerick trip includes the Atlantic Edge exhibition.

Public day trips through the Burren

For a west-coast base, start with Galway or Limerick. Dublin departures combine a longer road day with Galway time; the Galway cave-stop excursion charges Aillwee admission separately.

Day trips from Galway

The bus day departing from Merchants Road by Eyre Square takes eight hours and includes a driver-guide, an air-conditioned bus and entry to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre and Atlantic Edge. Stops along the way break up the journey. This suits visitors who want the road transport and the main cliff visit arranged together.

The eight-hour excursion starting on Forster Street also includes a driver-guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and the Cliffs Visitor Experience. Aillwee Cave admission is extra on that option. Choose it for the combination of regional sightseeing and the opportunity for a cave visit, budgeting for the underground attraction separately. Read the Aillwee guide for direct visitor arrangements and physical access.

Use the Galway city guide for the city part of your stay. Keep city sightseeing and a Burren day as distinct planning decisions, especially when you need to reach a morning meeting point.

Departures from Dublin

The excursion starting at the Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square North runs for thirteen hours. It includes a guide and separate driver, live bus commentary, cliff visitor admission and two hours at the cliffs. Time in Galway includes a short orientation walk. Ennistymon, Kinvara and Dunguaire Castle are passed on the journey, so treat those as route scenery rather than promised interior visits.

The thirteen-hour public bus departing on Bachelors Walk includes guided visits and free time in Galway and at the cliffs, plus admission to the visitor centre and O’Brien’s Tower. Its guide and driver are separate roles. Although its transport description uses the word private, this is a shared public excursion; travellers seeking an exclusive vehicle should choose one of the private formats instead.

These departures fit a Dublin base when the cliffs are a priority and a long road day is acceptable. They offer a broad introduction to the region. Travellers chiefly interested in plants, geology underfoot or a substantial park walk should give the national park a dedicated plan.

A day out from Limerick

The eight-hour excursion from Arthurs Quay includes transport, a guide, the Cliffs of Moher entrance fee and an Atlantic Edge exhibition ticket. That makes the visitor exhibition a concrete part of the day rather than an extra regional activity to arrange yourself. It suits a Limerick base and an interest in the coast with interpretive visitor content.

Compare it with the Galway departures by where you are sleeping and how easily you can reach the meeting point. A departure city is part of the product: a regional company name or a general transfer service is not a reason to assume that a city bus trip will collect you elsewhere.

Planning from Shannon

If you arrive at Shannon Airport, begin with the onward journey to your base. Bus 330 serves Shannon Airport and Ennis; travel onwards towards the Burren on the 350 requires a separately planned connection. The excursions compared here depart from their named cities. For taxis, transfers, car hire and parking, follow the Shannon arrival guidance rather than fitting an airport arrival into a presumed tour pickup.

Keep the sightseeing day realistic

Cliff admission and access to the coastal trail are different matters. The status dated 1 August 2026 closes the southern Liscannor/Hag’s Head section to the Experience and prevents a through walk between Doolin and the visitor centre. Plan the open visitor areas as the cliff visit, respect barriers and use the cliffs guide for the access details.

For a bus day, wear footwear suitable for the outdoor stops and carry clothing appropriate to the coast. If you want to add time in Doolin or a separate cave visit, make it part of another independently planned day rather than assuming a group bus will wait. Wind, tide and swell matter together for any later boat plans.

Questions about the bus excursions

Is Aillwee Cave included in the Galway cave-stop tour?

The Forster Street excursion includes the Cliffs Visitor Experience, transport and a driver-guide. Entry to Aillwee Cave is paid separately.

Does driving through the Burren mean a national park walk?

A road excursion gives a regional overview. A national park walk requires choosing a marked route and preparing for the terrain. Mullaghmore routes are very difficult.

When should I choose a private trip?

A private road trip suits a party wanting the specific Poulnabrone and castle-stop itineraries or an exclusive vehicle. Compare the starting point and group capacity with your own plans.
